“Why bother? Why spend that kind of money? It’s just a logo – I have more important things to spend money on.”

It can be tough prioritising spending as a business. There’s always something hijacking our bank accounts: new equipment, training and resources (not to mention non-negotiable overheads such as utilities, rent, staff etc.).

Wouldn’t it be amazing if your potential customers could see how good you really were?

It is a common problem in the small business world and I won’t try and play it down. Times are hard, and there’s always a cheaper option or more pressing need. But your business is VALUABLE. A professional, well-designed identity is a huge asset to those companies brave enough and forward-thinking enough to make the investment.

When I talk about an identity I don’t mean ‘just’ a logo, although that’s a key part. I mean all the ways your business is visually represented at any point of interaction. A consistent and engaging use of colour, imagery, graphics, type or pattern that works together with the logo brings benefits much more valuable than many people realise.

How much are we talking about…?

Spending an initial sum of money equivalent to, say, a family holiday may feel like a wrench – if not downright ridiculous – to some small business owners who probably feel like the money is coming directly out of their own pocket (often it is). Rest assured, the impact can yield both immediate results and long-term success.

Let me say it again. Your business is valuable. Why would you portray it any other way?

…there’s always a cheaper option or more pressing need. But your business is VALUABLE

So what’s the impact?

Wouldn’t it be amazing if your potential customers could see how good you really were? Wouldn’t it be fantastic if yours was the first option that came to their mind, ahead of your competitors, simply because of their perception of you, giving you the chance to show how good you really are.

This article aims to start a short series of pieces which outline four key advantages that companies have when they invest in the design of their brand.

These are:

• Being recognisable
• Inspiring trust

• Provoking desire, and
• Taking pride in their appearance.

So over the coming weeks I’ll be presenting articles which expand upon these benefits in the hope that it’s helpful for business owners who previously haven’t been shown why us designers do what we do!
