Background

Katalistik, an internet marketing and software application development company based in Minneapolis, USA, came across my work and contacted me to commission the design of a logo and identity for their soon-to-launch business. All within a very short timescale of one week...

Idea

The starting point for the chosen solution came from the letters ‘K’ that ‘bookended’ the intentionally misspelled name, start and finish. In reflecting these back-to-back, I began developing an asterisk-shaped icon that would resemble a spark or explosion.

With the client seeing themselves as a catalyst that enabled their customers to grow and expand, this concept was popular and fitted perfectly with the company name.

Execution

Having refined the form of the mark to give depth, geometric accuracy and a dynamic sense of energy I worked on two colour palette options. The preferred option was based on vibrant hues of red, green and blue, linking the logo with the RGB colour system used for screen-based application while also resembling colours from a cartoon science lab – perfect for symbolising a chemical reaction!

I carried the logo design through to letterheads and special business cards with a spot UV applied to one side. The client applied it to their new website, offering high praise for the way I was able to take their brief and produce such an appropriate and dynamic logo and brand identity in such a short space of time.
