Mutley Baptist Church is a large church in Plymouth, located in the busy and popular community of Mutley Plain. The logo used by the church for a number of years had, like a lot of church logos, become very outdated and I was asked by the church Communications Team to refresh the visual identity of the whole church, starting with a new logo.
Being careful to avoid cheesy clichés where possible, I boldly suggested a logo with a cross in the centre! Despite being a commonly used graphic within churches worldwide, I provided an original take on the theme, adding an organic branch motif to the cross to represent new life that stems from the central core of the Christian faith.
After the logo was refined to a high standard, simple guidelines were produced to help office staff and group leaders to keep the new visual identity consistent – no mean feat in a church the size of Mutley.
Further applications of the identity are ongoing and have included sub-logos for various groups and events, Christmas publicity, signage, exhibition banners, a website and a popular and high quality custom die-cut welcome pack including a regularly updated set of card inserts.

"Owen was asked to redesign the church logo, which has been a great success, capturing the essence of what we are, the message we wish to give and the welcome we wish to show as a living and growing church in the community. His work is outstanding in concept and style."
