Summertime Publishing are an independent publisher headed up by prolific British author Jo Parfitt in The Hague, Netherlands and Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.
As an ex-pat herself, Jo has found a niche market for publishing memoirs, stories and guides that feature overseas life, travel, drama and information. Summertime publish approximately 12 books per year by authors from around the world.
My role in each book I've designed for Summertime is to read the manuscript and create a dynamic and appropriate cover as well as typesetting, font selection and layout of text pages.
Each book is different – from What About Your Saucepans (dramatic, murderous and gripping) through to Passage to Persia (a fascinating look back on the life of a Christian missionary in Iran in the mid 20th Century) and the Stress-free Guide to Studying in the States (a treasure trove of useful guidance and information). From cover concepts to layout tricks, each incorporates different ideas that support and enhance the author's work.
From gunshots in paradise to patriotic graduation caps, old passport photos to poignant family photos and evocative, textured illustrations (cover illustration and internal vignettes on B at Home are by talented Dutch artist Agnes Loonstra), each execution is different and relevant, helping to engage the reader from the start and hint at the subject matter within.
Internal text pages give me opportunity to flex my more pragmatic side – marrying legibility and style with good economy of page count to leave the author with a book people will want to pick up and delve into, all within tight production guidelines.
Fonts used (if you're interested...): What About Your Saucepans: Calluna and Helvetica Bold Condensed; The Stress-free Guide...: Minion Pro and Gotham; Harvesting Stones: Calluna and Fontin; Passage to Persia: Baskerville and Typewriter URW; B at Home: Calluna and Calluna Sans (used to differentiate the two narrators' voices).
From cover concepts to layout tricks, each incorporates different ideas that support and enhance the author's work.
